What is fika

Fika is a Swedish word for taking a break for a coffee and a bite to eat. But it means much more than that: a moment to relax, catch up with family and laugh with friends.

That idea runs the whole shop. Everything is baked in-house, from the morning cinnamon and cardamom buns to the sourdough on the shelves, and the coffee is made properly and without a rush. It is the kind of corner café where you are welcome to sit a while.

Fika is an independent, women-run café and bakery on Chatsworth Road, one of Lower Clapton's best-loved little high streets, with a handful of tables out on the pavement when the sun is out.

The words above are Fika's own, painted on the wall inside the shop.

Colourful, generous and mostly veg-forward: a rotating set of salads made in Fika's own kitchen. Build a plate, or take a box back to Millfields Park.

“The baked produce here is absolutely amazing. I had a pistachio croissant and I must say it is miles ahead in freshness and flavour. I will be back for sure.”

“Iced americano and pain au chocolat were delicious. All the pastries looked scrumptious, and the pain au chocolat was very buttery, generous with the chocolate and freshly baked.”

Yes. The buns, pastries, cakes and sourdough are all baked on site, so the bakery case changes through the day and the earlier you come, the fuller it is. The deli salads are made fresh in our kitchen each morning too.

Both. There is seating inside and a few tables out on the pavement when the weather is kind, and everything on the counter can be boxed up to take away, whether that is a coffee, a bun or a deli plate for the park.

Plenty. The deli counter is largely vegetable-led, with salads like roasted carrots, tenderstem broccoli and butternut squash, and there are plant-milk options for coffee. If you have a specific dietary need, just ask the team at the counter and they will point you to what works.

We serve speciality coffee roasted in the UK by The Roasting Party, pulled as espresso and made up into flat whites, lattes, cappuccinos and cold brew. There is chai, matcha and hot chocolate for those who would rather skip the coffee.
